HAIGA
The
opportunity to combine both haiku and photography in a haiga is one of
creative joy.
Onbedorven fotografie vraagt soberheid.
ENGLISH:
The haiga, a traditional Japanese art form, is considered the twin sister of the haiku. Paintings and illustrations are connected with a haiku. Text and images go together well. Photography is a new and contemporary haiga possibility, of course, with a lot of commentary, pro and con, on the topic. The lettering or font chosen to accompany the illustration, however, is sometimes a crying shame. The use of Photoshop requires a great deal of skill. Work the quality of a free local newspaper is deficient. The term haiga means "haiku painting": "hai" comes from haiku and "ga" is the word for painting. Haiga are also called: haiku painting, poem painting, photo haiku or haiku photo. The definition 'haïsha' is a misnomer ! The accompanying pictures are related to the poems, or only complement them. The haiga here are my personal interpretations of an art form using photos, paintings & line drawings. Haiga is a traditional Japanese art form alongside the development of haiku around 1600. Normally, the poet adds paintings to his own haiku, but nowadays it is not unusual that two or more artists compose haiga, the poet writing the haiku and the painter realising the artwork. On this web page, the painting is replaced by digital photo's and computer made images. The opportunity to combine both haiku and photography in a haiga is one of creative joy. The gift of haiga is to recall insightful feelings. For a number of years, I am writing my haiku afterwards, into and around the completed photo or illustration. In a haiga, the illustration and the haiku are symbiotical. Both need a perfect balance. I prefer a sober lay-out and tightness in the lettering. And please no Japonism, no kitch, no American glitter nor small talk about Jezus and his seven dwarfs...
